5 Lever Locks

5 lever mortise lock - Falcon LocksI was called to a property recently in the Dobcross area in Saddleworth that required the lock upgrading to a 5 lever lock.

The customer was unable to unlock their back door.

The door in question was a wooden one with a mortice lock. Now as the lock was in the door when they moved in, they were unaware that what was fitted was the incorrect type of lock.

It had a 3 lever mortice lock fitted, which is really only suitable for internal doors.

On external timber doors you must have a British Standard lock that conforms to BS3621.

The easiest way to find whether your lock is up to standard is look on the face plate on the edge of the door. It should have the British Kite Mark stamped into it!

If there is no Kite Mark then you are not covered by your insurance. Even if a burgler gains entry to your property by another entrance, your insurance company can use this as an excuse not to pay you!

If in any doubt at all, I would be happy to give you some advice or even replace the lock with the correct lock.
